Lesson summaries (Sept)

Lesson 1 14/09/10 author : Ceri

1 NAMES We learnt each other's names and talked about them a bit. We talked about names that run in the family (= are used a lot in the same family) and patron saints and great grandparents (both paternal and maternal). We talked about the origin of surnames and parents and families, and noticed quite a strong link between Cádiz and the North of Spain (and France in Juliette's case), and of fathers moving south, falling in love and staying ;)

At the end of the discussion we looked at the pronunciation of the vowels in uncle, cousin and aunt (can you remember them?)

2 LEARNING You interviewed each other about your past (and present) English learning experiences. I learnt that Juliette is interested in taking the First Certificate exam (Juliette, I'll send you some links to useful websites later this week), that Jaime is moving to Philadelphia at the end of September, that both Mercedes and César are enrolled at EOI schools, that Mercedes uses youtube and podcasts to practise English, that Fernando has just finished his university studies and has been on holiday all summer, well, not totally on holiday - he was also a student at the summer courses in the morning with Jaime and Mercedes.

We talked about the difference between primary and secondary schools (and looked at how to pronounce those two words - remember?). We also looked at the difference between job-hunting and head-hunting, and how sometimes being unemployed is good because it gives you a chance to study or travel.

3 TECHNOLOGY You found out about each other's day-to-day use of technology like mobile phones, email, the internet, ipods/mp3 players and digital cameras. I learnt about tuenti, and César introduced the class to skype and explained how he uses it with his son in Cordoba. We all use email on a regular basis and we shared email addresses. We also looked at the pronunciation of the alphabet (can you remember how to say H, J, G, I?) and how to spell out email addresses. (can you remember how to say _, @ and . ?)

4 BEACHES We finished by finally switching on the laptop and the projector and looking at a photo of a wave breaking on a beach. We talked about words for describing beaches : long, windy, the shore, the water's edge, and for describing waves (long and rolling) and sand (soft and fine) . We voted for our favourite beaches and Playa Victoria (or should we call it Victoria Beach?) was number 1, closely followed by Bolonia. And the favourite season and time of day? I don't think that was so clear, but we all agreed that August was too crowded - and the water in the Caleta is often polluted by the oil of the fishing boats. .

Lesson 2 16/09/10 author: Ceri

1 HOW ARE YOU? We looked at various ways to answering the question, How are you? and at the difference between good and well. Do you remember the difference? And the three different uses of "well"?

2 REVIEW We looked back at last Tuesday's lessons and the new language that came up. Juliette, Jaime and Fernando taught some new words and expressions to the new students - and you did it very well too! I was impressed. Challenge came up again - both meaning and pronunciation and reading out email addresses. By the way, I hope I've got them all right. Please let me know!

3 ALAMEDA Juliette shared her photo of the sea walls along the Alameda Apodaca with us. A beautiful photo and an interesting conversation. We talked about what to call it, is it a park, a square, a green space/area? I thought maybe it was a kind of park, but Fernando pointed out it doesn't have a fence ... . But we all agreed that it's a lovely place, shady and peaceful in summer, sheltered from the wind, romantic for some but bright and fun too. We talked about the tiles, and the streetlights and that it was definitely worth it - taking the photo and bringing it into class.

I'm looking forward to more photos.

4 GOING TO/WILL Juliette explained that she took the photo because her mother thought she might paint the scene. We don't know if she's going to or not. But it seems that she likes painting landscapes.

* For this stage of the lesson I'm not going to give a summary. I'd like you to do that, please. I'll be really interested to see how you describe it. That'll be one of the tasks from today. If you send me a description, please remember to "Reply All" and send a copy to the whole group.

Lesson 3 21/09/10 author : Ceri

1 Weekend activities

We looked at a list of weekend activities, some of the vocabulary was new to you, though not a lot. And there were a few pronunciation points that came up. I'm attaching the list with the pronunciation marked, but before you look at it, why not try this quick test of your memory? Here are the expressions we looked at. The verbs are missing. Can you remember them?

____ a lie in, ___ it easy on the sofa, ___ walking in the mountains, ___ a couple of drinks with friends, _____ a game of tennis, ___ out on a date, _____ an art gallery, ____ a language course, _____ the house, ____ running along the beach, ___ some emails, ____ on facebook, ___ some phone calls, ___ some sport, ___ too much, ___some studying, ____ a driving lesson, ____ some new clothes, ____

mm ... that last one's difficult ;)
So, how many did you remember? Now have a look at the attachment and check.

A possible task to recycle this vocabulary might be to write about what you like doing at the weekend. Maybe a short text called "What the weekend means to me". You might want to use some vocabulary from the next section too.

2 Saturday people

We read four short descriptions of four different personality types. Can you remember them? I'm attaching some notes on the difficult vocabulary. Can you remember what each one means? Which ones could you use to describe you and your Saturday morning routines?

3 Images
We looked at a slideshow with five images. Can you remember what they were? Can you remember who chose them and why?

Look at this list of some of the new words and expressions we collected during the discussion. Can you use them to write a short summary of this part of the lesson? Thanks! Can you send a copy to everyone in the group? Thanks again :)

shipyard, cliffs, tram, Roman period, Roman road, low tide, high tide

4 sunsets and prepostions
We look at a short text from virtualtourist.com describing a sunset on Playa Victoria (thank you Mercedes for finding that).

Here it is without the prepostions. Can you remember them? You can check your answers on the internet ;)

The first must see activity is seeing the sunset _____ Playa Victoria. It never disappoints. I used to live ______ a flat with a sea view ______ Playa Victoria (the best beach ____ Cadiz city). The ocean has so many faces to charm you with.

Playa Victoria is one ______ the beaches that goes along the road ______ San Fernando to Cadiz centre. Although it is really one long beach it has 3 names: Cortadura, Playa Victoria and Playa Santa Maria. You can see all the way ________ the Cathedral looking _______ the right and San Fernando _____the left.

You can sit out in any one of the beach bars and enjoy the sunset sipping a refreshment. Or you can take a romantic walk ______ the shoreline watching the sun slip below the sea and filling the sky _____ pinks, reds, yellows and oranges. As the sun is just above the horizon it appears as a large pinkish red glowing ball. It really is a sight to see.

The pinkish light ____the sea and _______the normally fine whitish sand give everything a surreal look and feel.

Lesson 4 (with Dan) 23/09/10 author: Paco
